Rosetta Stone

What is the Rosetta Stone? The Rosetta Stone is an Ancient Egyptian artifact which singularly advanced modern understanding of Egypt’s hieroglyphic writing. The Rosetta Stone, or Rosetta "Stele" as the latter word would have been known at the time, was originally thought to be granite or basalt, but after further research, has been described as granodiorite. The Rosetta Stone was carved during the Ptolemaic Era (325 BC to 30 BC) circa 196 BC, and is dark blue, pinkish and grey in color. It is approximately 45 inches tall, by 29 inches wide, almost a foot thick, and weighs more than a ton and a half. Although it is now known as the Rosetta Stone, it was actually discovered in August 1799 by French soldiers rebuilding Fort St. Julien 30 miles from Alexandria near a town named El-Rashid, a harbour on the Mediterranean coast. The town of El-Rashid is traditionally known as Rosetta, lending the Rosetta Stone its modern name. The Rosetta Stone currently resides on public display in the British Museum in London as a result of the French surrendering Egypt and its captured relics to the British in 1801.

Rosetta Stone Language

The Rosetta Stone Language is made up of 3 different texts or scripts, Hieroglyphic, on the top portion; Egyptian Demotic on the middle portion; and Koine Greek, on the bottom portion, but it actually only contains 2 languages, Egyptian And Greek. The hieroglyphic language was used for all important or religious documents as well as in carvings that adorn some of the most ancient Egyptian discoveries such as monuments, temples, and pyramids, as well as pottery, smaller sculptures, and art. Think of the Rosetta Stone and the Rosetta Stone Language as an ancient decoder ring, only much larger and much harder to carry. At the aforementioned weight of over 1,500 pounds, it makes it the heaviest decoder ring in existence, however it wasn't actually retrieved intact. The top most left and right corners are broken off, as well as the bottom right, and the missing pieces containing the full Rosetta Stone Language were never recovered. It is estimated that the complete Rosetta Stone Language would have encompassed approximately 18 to 24 inches more stone, and resemble other stele created during the age of Ptolemy. If you take a look at the image to the left you can see where the Rosetta Stone would "fit" into its completed form. Scholars started deciphering the Rosetta Stone Language before 1800, but until it ended up in British hands, was largely unsuccessful. Ironically, it was a French scholar, Silvestre de Sacy and a Swedish diplomat named Akerblad, that were able to identify several proper names contained within the Demotic text when comparing it to the Greek. A linguistic named Young made further progress, and by 1814 he was able to work out a phonetic alphabet, but was unable to realise that the translations of the Rosetta Stone Language were not literal, but paraphrases. It was not until Jean-François Champollion, another French scholar, discovered that the Rosetta Stone Language contained on the Rosetta Stone was actually the Greek text translated to the Hieroglyphic text in 1822, that the code was cracked, and he successfully deciphered the Rosetta Stone Language. It contained an entire commemoratiom of the ascension of Ptolemy V Epiphanes to the throne of Egypt in the year 197-196 BC, written by priests after a "General Council" was held and included a "Credo" for priests, as well as sailors, soldiers and the civilians of Egypt. The Rosetta Stone Language was carved onto the Rosetta Stone so that its "Creeds" were understood by all...as well as followed. To what extent this succeeded resides within history itself.

Rosetta Stone Software

Perhaps one of the most ambitious undertakings in 196 BC, was the foresight of Ptolemy V Epiphanes to try and bridge the gap of language. Not since the Tower In Babel, the city of King Nimrod (This is where the modern day insult originates) had such a concept entered into our documented history. That particular example may have failed, but a modern company, Rosetta Stone Software, Ltd. have taken up the banner, by producing the Rosetta Stone Software to not only bridge the gap, but allow modern man and woman to learn one of thirty very different languages that are not there mother tongue. Rosetta Stone Software is the most recognised language-learning software brand in the market. The global market for language-learning products and services is estimated to be over $100 billion and this market is expected to continue to grow with each passing year. Aptly named by the company, Rosetta Stone Software, statistics prove that you will never be exposed to a more instructive and complete learning method, tool or program. There are already millions of language learners in more than 150 countries using the Rosetta Stone Software which employs the Dynamic Immersion Method, using everyday images to convey the meaning of spoken and written phrases within the Rosetta Stone Software program. It is similar to the first time learning method children use. To delve into the Rosetta Stone Software understanding, and to provide an example, think of a newborn child and when they look at an apple. When we point at the apple and say "Apple", the curious child learns that the object is an apple, and not an orange, or something else. The Rosetta Stone Software functions much the same way as this. In more technical terms it uses thousands of real life images to convey the meaning of spoken and written phrases in the Rosetta Stone Software program. Its carefully sequenced structure, and the use of native speakers of the language being learned, as well as its ability to provide instantaneous feedback, teaches the new language without ineffective memorisation, translation or the tedious grammar drills associated with other language learning software. Imagine first de-educating ourselves to learn at the level that our children do with there first language, and to then learn many new things, words or languages through the use of the Rosetta Stone Software. Imagine the possibility of understanding and being able to communicate using one of thirty different languages used across the world...be it for your career, travel, or recreation. Your future would become unbound.

Attention English Language Teachers and Learners - There is No Such Thing As Grammar
03/10/2010 04:20 PM

Grammar is linear and spoken English is abstract. Latin grammar with its hundreds of 1 + 1 = 2 rules is too concrete to adequately characterize English writing, much less speaking. "Adjectives describe nouns" is a good example of an overplayed grammar rule that simply does not ring true.
